Houston’s African American genealogical society, AAHGS-H-Town, will officially change their name to the Willie Lee Gay-H-Town Chapter at a ceremony being held at the Trinity East United Methodist Church Thursday February 19 at 7 p.m.
The society name change honors Willie Lee Gay an active Houston preservationist and member of the society. Gay has been responsible for establishing a number of historical markers throughout the City of Houston, including one at Covington House.
Co-sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, the meeting will include a free program, Celebrating African American Family History. Free and open to the public the program will describe some of the research opportunities available to those seeking their African American roots.
The chapter is an affiliate of the national African American Historical and Genealogical Society. The local chapter meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Saturday of each month, January-June and September to December. Meetings are held at the Robert James Terry Library on the campus of Texas Southern University.
Annual local membership dues in the local chapter are $15 for individuals and $20 for families. In addition one must be a member of the national chapter whose annual dues are $35 for individuals and $40 for families.

BRAZOSPORT SOCIETY HOST SEMINAR
Houston author, lecturer and instructor, Trevia Wooster Beverly, will be the featured speaker at the Brazosport Genealogical Society’s annual seminar. The seminar will be held at the Lake Jackson Civic Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday February 21.
Beverly’s topics will include Research in North Carolina and South Carolina; Researching Military Records; Federal Population and Non-Population Censuses; How and Where to Find Genealogical and Historical Information.
During lunch Ron Strybos will talk about the Life of a Confederate Infantry Soldier. Dressed in a Confederate uniform Strybos will describe his uniform, weapons, equipment and the everyday activities of a soldier serving in the military during the early 1860’s.

HINCKLEY IN SAN MARCOS
Kathleen Hinckley, a nationally known professional genealogist and private investigator specializing in locating missing family members will be the featured speaker at the San Marcos-Hays County Genealogical Society’s annual seminar. The seminar will be held at the First Lutheran Church, 130 West Holland in San Marcos from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday February 21.
Hinckley’s topics will include Advanced Census Research; World War I and World War II Military Records; Locating Living Persons; and How to Organize Your Genealogical Office.
HUMPHREY DELIVERS TELEPHONE LECTURE
The National Genealogical Society will sponsor a telephone lecture delivered by professional German researcher John Humphrey. The lecture, An Introduction to Researching German Ancestors, will be held Saturday February 21 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. (Eastern Time) .
