Sponsored each year by Scholarly Resources Publishing Company the National Genealogical Society awards the coveted NGS Filby Prize for Genealogical Librarianship to a single special person. The prize includes a $1,000 monetary award to a librarian employed for at least five years in a public, academic or special library environment.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE WEBSITE CREATED

A website and mailing list has been created at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com to keep readers updated on the status of bills of importance to genealogists and historians pending in the Texas Legislature .

Visit the website to learn the latest information on the DD 214 military discharge and other bills pending in Texas and other states. Paramount on the website is a discussion of Identity theft and public records. In addition learn the latest information on Florida’s Governor Jeb Bush’s quest to dismantle the Florida State Library and Archives.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY WELCOMES WITCHER

The Williamson County Genealogical Society will hold their annual seminar on Saturday March 8 at the First United Methodist Church in Round Rock.

Curt B. Witcher, Manager of the Genealogical Department of the Allen County Public Library of Fort Wayne, Indiana, will address the all day seminar. His topics will include a discussion on PERSI, the Periodical Source Index, and talks on how to use military, church and government documents.

TEXAS GERMANS MEET

The Texas German Society will host their 19th Annual Convention Saturday March 15. The all day convention will be held at Westside High School, 14201 Briar Forest at Highway 6 in West Houston.

Emphasis of the lectures at the convention will center around the German settlement of the Houston area. For more information and to register contact Flora von Roeder at 713-666-6085.

SOCIETIES WANTED FOR GENEALOGY FAIR

The Alexander Hodge Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution will sponsor a Genealogy Fair Saturday April 12 in Sugar Land. Societies interested in free exhibiting are asked to contact Lance Salge at salge@texas.net or 281-265-0733. Further information about the fair will be forthcoming in this column in late March.

FIND AN ANCESTOR’S MILITARY SERVICE

To help researchers locate military service information on their ancestors Mic Barnette will lead a class, American Military Records for Genealogists and Historians. The class will explore the types of records available for each American war from the colonial days to present. It will discuss the information contained in those records and tell where they may be located.

The class will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday March 18 at Leisure Learning’s 2990 Richmond Avenue Campus. For more information and to register contact Leisure Learning at 713-529-4414.
